What is Opposite in Meaning?

“Opposite in Meaning” refer to words that have reverse or different meaning from the one in the question.

They are also called Antonyms.

How to answer opposite in meaning questions in JAMB and WAEC

Let’s take an example.

INSTRUCTION: choose the opposite in meaning of the word in italic.

The house was invaded by the young officers.

  • A. set up
  • B. put down
  • C. defended
  • D. built

1. Read the sentence

The questions on opposite in meaning are often in a short sentence format. So read it carefully.

  • The house was invaded by the young officers.

2. Spot the word in italic

From our example above,

  • The word in italic is “invaded“.

3. Read the sentence again

Re-read the sentence but this time, with emphasis on the word in italic.

  • The house was INVADED by the young officers.

4. Get the meaning of the word in italic

There are two smart methods of guessing the correct meaning of words without using the dictionary.

Let’s assume you already know that “invaded” means “moved in or entered by force”.

5. Go through the options

Here are the options in our example:

  • A. set up
  • B. put down
  • C. defended
  • D. built

6. Pick the opposite in meaning

Since “opposite” means “different”, pick the option whose meaning is completely different from the one in our STEP (4).

Therefore,

Option (C) is our correct answer.
