They are also called Synonyms.

How to answer nearest in meaning questions in JAMB and WAEC

Let’s take an example.

INSTRUCTION: choose the nearest in meaning to the word in italic.

His father surmounted the myriad of obstacles on his way.

  • A. few
  • B. many
  • C. some
  • D. little

1. Read the sentence

The questions on nearest in meaning are often in a short sentence format. So read it carefully.

  • His father surmounted the myriad of obstacles on his way.

2. Spot the word in italic

From our example above,

  • The word in italic is “myriad“.

3. Read the sentence again

Re-read the sentence but this time, with emphasis on the word in italic.

  • His father surmounted the MYRIAD of obstacles on his way.

4. Get the meaning of the word in italic

There are two smart methods of guessing the correct meaning of words without using the dictionary.

5. Go through the options

Here are the options in our example:

Since “nearest” means “similar”, pick the option that is very similar in meaning with the one in our STEP (4).

Therefore,

Option (B) is our correct answer.
