Steps in addition of fractions

  • Convert mixed to improper fraction.
  • Find their LCM.
  • Divide the LCM by the denominator.
  • Multiply by the numerator.
  • Add the numerators.
  • Reduce to its lowest form.

Sample question

Let’s take an example.

2\frac{1}{3} + \frac{10}{4}

1. Convert the mixed fraction to improper fraction

2\frac{1}{3} (mixed fraction)

= \dfrac{7}{3} (improper fraction)

Therefore…

\dfrac{7}{3} + \dfrac{10}{4}

2. Find the LCM of the denominators

The LCM of 3 and 4

= 12

3. Write the LCM as your new denominator

\dfrac{}{12}

4. Divide the LCM by each denominator

12 ÷ 3 = 4

12 ÷ 4 = 3

5. Multiply the answer by their numerator

4 × 7 = 28

3 × 10 = 30

6. Write the answers as new numerators

\dfrac{28+30}{12}

7. Add the new numerators

\dfrac{28+30}{12}

= \dfrac{58}{12}

8. Reduce to its lowest form

\dfrac{58}{12}

= \dfrac{29}{6}
